BMSEED is partnering with Boston University to develop a nanoclip peripheral nerve interface (ncPNI) for more biomechanically compatible neuroprostheses in fine nerve tissues. The technology combines soft, stretchable electrodes fabricated at BMSEED with 3D-printed nanoclips developed at BU. BU received an R21 award from NIH in May 2019 for the project. As of May 2020, major milestones include the development and electromechanical characterization of the electrodes and the fabrication and implantation of prototype nanoclips. In the next year, BMSEED and BU will assess the ncPNI in vivo in the zebra finch’s song and vocalization-linked hypoglossal nerve with published results to follow.
